A Mini FanFic

By James Reeder

It Was Christmas in Cutter Gap, the snow was falling heavy.  Christy and David had only been married a short time.

Christy and Miss Alice was sitting in the parlor when the door swung open. It was David and he was dragging a huge pine behind him.  Christy closed the door behind him.  He was covered with snow; he smiled.  "Merry Christmas!”  Christy's eyes sparkled when he set the tree up. "Oh, David it’s perfect!

The children have worked for weeks making decorations, Miss Alice spoke up, "Yes, but the best decoration of all is the manger the children made.”  She walked over to the table where it was setting.  They had used cardboard cut outs, sticks and cloth to make it.

Christy watched as Alice admired each piece.  She could see God’s love beaming from her dark eyes.  The light seemed to cast a halo around her dark brown hair.

David said "Well, Christy this is your first Christmas as Mrs. Grantland.  He put his arms around his wife, Christy smiled "May we have many, many more.

Alice said, “It’s almost time for everyone to arrive.  David said, “Is Neal coming?”

He and Neil had become good friends, not at all like the rivals they were.  Neil had been David’s best man at his wedding.  He had accepted Christy’s decision, and knew she loved David.

Miss Alice answered, "I hope so David, he needs to make his peace with God.”

Christy said "Yes that would be a wonderful Christmas Miracle.”

Ruby Mae and Fairlight came in.  Ruby Mae's eyes were big, "Land sakes, whats that thar tree doin in the house?”

Christy said, “It’s a Christmas tree, we're going to decorate it.”

Ruby Mae said "You city folks sure have funny ways.”

There was a knock at the door.  Alice opened it.

“Neil! I'm glad Thee could make it.”

Alus its getting colder out there.  I'm afraid we may get snowed in.”

David said, “We have plenty of room.”

Everyone began arriving Jeb, Tom and Opal, Swannie O'Teal, The

Allans, Kyle Coburn.

Fairlight stepped into the room, “Dinner’s ready.”

When David said Grace, Neil never bowed his head, he just stared ahead.  After dinner, the children decorated the tree.  Then everyone gathered around the piano.  Christy played and David played his guitar.  They sang Silent Night, Away in a Manger, Joy to the World.

As they sang, Neil thought back to when he was a child, sitting in front of the fireplace singing those same songs.  He remembered his Mothers Bible.  But that was so long ago and so much had happened.

Then David began to read the Christmas story he told of Jesus Life and his unending love for all.  Alice looked over to Neil and said, “Neil, will thee not let the Christmas star shine in thy heart?”

Neil said, “What do ya mean?”

Alice motioned toward the manger.

Neil said, “Why would he Love me Alice?”

“He does Neil more than you know.”

“Will you pray with me Neil?”

Slowly Neil nodded Alice.  David and Christy knelt beside him.  When he finished, Creed began to yell, “Teacher, Preacher, come here!”

When they went out on the porch Creed was pointing to the sky.  It was a huge star in the shape of a cross.  It lit up the whole sky.

As Neil looked he smiled and said, “Now I understand, the Christmas star is Jesus.” And for the first time Neil knew real Peace.

David looked at his wife and said. “A real Christmas Miracle.”
