The Meaning of the Season
by Cathy W.
Snow began to fall on Christmas Day
And it was hard to keep the little ones at bay.
The Spencer children laughed in delight
As every blessed thing was covered in
white.
The O’Teales took the God-given
chance
To run in the fields, and to spin and
dance.
The Allen kids cooked up a plan
To create for themselves a giant
snowman.
The Holcombes decided that a
snowball fight
For Christmas Day fun was exactly right.
A fort was the fun of the family McHone
Followed by hot cider and steaming
cornpone.
The Holt children went to gather icicles
Their cold noses as shiny as
brand-new nickels.
Snow angels did the Beck family make
While Mrs. Beck used the rare quiet
to bake.
As the Cove’s children took the time to play
Miss Alice found the beauty a reminder to pray.
David had to endure Ruby Mae’s chatter
Whereas Christy contemplated what really did matter.
The meaning of the season was on her mind
As God’s new mission for her did she find.
Doctor Neil MacNeill enjoyed his first Christmas off
No one in the Cove was sick---not even a cough.
For the first time in months he had the chance to reflect
About God and other things that would his life affect.
Were lives really all in God’s control
And did Neil only play a very minor role?
As the snow fell in flakes that were each unique
A single tear rolled down the doctor’s cheek.
On a truly white Christmas he finally knew
Why in spring the flowers, trees, and grass grew.
Why Alice Henderson had such a natural light
And why Christy could deal with her fear of the night.
Why sometimes a hopeless case managed to live
And how some people of themselves
could seem to give.
His spirit swelled with its newfound health
And he could see his future, full of wealth.
Not of money, gold, or jewels, mind you
But of a heavenly love that is pure and true.
Doctor Neil MacNeill found God on Christmas Day
And for the first time with faith did he pray.
In Cutter Gap it was the best Christmas they had seen
Snow, fun,
and a miracle---what more could Christmas bring?
