“Memories of Cutter Gap”
By James and Debbie Reeder

It was a warm spring day in 1933, a middle aged Christy and her children, Kate and
little David found themselves amongst boxes and trunks.  Christy couldn't believe
that David took a position as Pastor of a church and mission in Virginia.  Kate and
little David opened up an old trunk, "Mother come and look what we found",

“Children you are supposed to be packing.”  Christy sat down beside her children
and she pulled out her sketch book and journal.  As she looked through them, she
said, "Has it really been 21 years since I arrived at Cutter Gap?"

Christy handed her books to her daughter and Christy reached into the trunk and
took out her wedding dress.  She gingerly removed it from the box and unwrapped it
from the paper and walked over to the mirror and held the dress up to herself.

As she was looking into the mirror, memories flooded back to her of her wedding day.
She remembered the look of love on David's face and remembered the loving tone in
Miss Alice's voice as she announced them man and wife.  Just then, little David said,
"Mommy you look like a princess."  And then Christy walked over to the bed and laid
the dress across it.  She took little David in her arms and said, "That's just what your
father said."

Kate was looking through the sketch book. "Mother tell us how you and father met",
Christy said you have heard that story at least a hundred times.  Little David said,
“Please, mommy, tell us.”

Christy just smiled. "Alright.  I had just gotten off the train in El Pano and it was
raining.  The man who was to meet me wasn't there so I went into the General Store
and I met Mr. Ben Pentland (The Mailman).  I finally talked him into letting me walk
with him to Cutter Gap.  Along the way, we met up with a man that had an accident, and
about that time Dr. MacNeill rode up.

The children said, "You mean Uncle Neil?" And then little David said, “Uncle Neil saved
his life.”  Christy said, “Yes he did.  It was late and very muddy from the rain.  I was
soaked from head to toe.  When Mr. Pentland knocked on the door, a very handsome
young man with a million dollar smile came to the door and picked me up as I began to fall.
Your father often teases me and tells me I hugged him before I knew his name.  I was
determined to make a good teacher, but my how I Was one for making mistakes with the
children and the people in the cove in those days.  But your father, was like a knight in
shining armor, he was always there for me.”

Kate said "Mother how did you choose father?"

Christy said, “As I was standing between them in the school yard that day, I finally
learned to listen to my heart and I knew that David Grantland was the one I loved.

Little David climbed up in his mommy's lap.  "Mommy, I'm glad you chose daddy."

Christy smiled and said, “I am too honey. Christy said, "We better get back to packing.

Kate said "Mother are you scared to move to Virginia?"

Christy said, “No, I look at it as an adventure.”  And about that time, they heard
footsteps and David came into the room.

He put his long loving arms around Christy, “Are you three ready to go?”,

Christy said, “Just about.”

David took Christy's hand and said, "Darling, don't worry, as long as we are together,
we will be fine and God will lead and guide us.”

Christy said, "David I'm not afraid, for after all I've done this before.”

David laughed and said, "That's my Miss Christy."
